About the Expedition
This expedition is an educational program through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) that combines backpacking, leadership development, environmental study, and cultural immersion in Tanzania. It is designed as a learning experience, not a sightseeing trip or short-term volunteer program.
Participants live and travel in small groups in remote environments, carrying their own gear and sharing daily responsibilities such as navigation, cooking, camp setup, and group decision-making. Leadership is practiced through rotating roles and real-time problem solving, with a strong emphasis on preparation, teamwork, and sound judgment.
The program also includes a cultural immersion and service component developed in partnership with local communities, with projects shaped by locally identified needs. Throughout the expedition, the focus remains on learning through experience, environmental responsibility, and respectful engagement.
About Ash
Ash is interested in environmental issues and how decisions made far away affect people and ecosystems on the ground. They’re exploring different paths—law, policy, or fieldwork—and want to understand those systems before choosing one.
This expedition offers space to learn by doing, work closely with others, and see how environmental challenges show up in real places. It involves significant preparation, training, and logistical planning long before departure. Contributions help support the full scope of the experience, from preparation and health requirements to travel and learning in the field.
Giving helps reduce financial barriers and supports an educational experience built on responsibility, leadership, and real-world context rather than tourism.
